/Remembering the trace of Old City Wall / Embracing the Diversity with Iconic Simplicity
/GENERAL APPROACH/
Suncheon, as one of the main cities of Jeolla province in history, possesses various traditional legacies all around the city. Besides, the site location had played important roles in entering to the Old City Wall as the South Gateway, which had been existed in the past. To envision a new Art Platform in this region aligning to the concept of Urban Regeneration, one of possible design approaches can be explored by excavating a series of symbolic metaphors from historical clues scattered around the city and translating those into new design strategies activating the declined city-center of Suncheon. In this regard, the design process could be initiated by defining a concentric boundary which can remind visitors of the old surrounding city wall demolished by Japan colonial rule in 1930. As a simple & iconic urban gesture, this encircled boundary will gently embrace the Art platform spatially and provide functional supports continuously along the boundary.
/IDEAS/
DEFINE BOUNDARY FROM HISTORY
As a main reference to link the lineage between historical Suncheon and the new Art Platform, the topology of surrounding old city wall can be applied to the site to define the boundary of the venue.
EVOKE REMINISCENCE
As a part of continuous developments of Suncheon aligning to the history, the new Art Platform should celebrate the legacies of Korean traditional architecture to build up its own global identity.
FREE UP GROUND
To make Art Platform as a flexible venue for continuous public activities, pilotis of Korean traditional Architecture translated to create multi-leveled interactive Art & Culture space.
INFILTRATED DAYLIGHT
To provide decent exhibition space, indirect daylight through skylights and clerestory can be one of the main interior design features which can affect the overall look of the building.
